Polish cooperation in the SALT PROJECT

On the11th of November in South Africa the SALT telescope was installed, the biggest telescope in the world. SALT was build 1759 meters under the sea level, its mirror is composed of 91 glass plates, which surface is equal to 10,5 meters of uniform mirror. The moving parts of this telescope weigh 82 tons and its dome is 30 meters high. 11 percent of this project was financed by Poland and the best Polish universities. Poland gave almost 3 million dollars for this project. That’s why Polish scientists and students  have got now 11 percent of all working time of SALT. They even don’t have to go to RPA to do some observations as it is enough to send e-mails to the scientists working there to receive  the results of the research.
