                       Polish Scientists in the UE

Young Polish scientists are together with the British and Germans the best in Europe. This year 20 – year - old Agata Karska was granted with the special award in UE competition for her work in astronomy.
The European Committee has been organizing the competition since 1989. The competitors are of highest skills and knowledge. Over 30 thousand young people sign up for the competition every year and there are only 16 awards to be given out (8 main and 8 special awards). This year one of the special awards went to Agata Karska, until recently a pupil of the secondary school in Inowrocław, now a student of Astronomy University in Toruń. Scientists from the Institute of Technology in Krakow designed a sack, which is supposed to prevent us from tragic consequences of floods in the future. Although the sack seems to have incredible features, Polishauthorities are not interested in buying it because of the high cost. Spaniards will probably buy this technology instead. "You throw a small sack of 60x40cm size and watch as it fills itselfwith 18 liters of water. The trapped water cannot leak out from the sack, the flat sack now looks like a pillow. You can built a wall consisting of layers of the sacks. After distending to the limits, the sacks adhere to each other so tightly, that they will not let any more water through. With one sack tucked into the cellar's window, you will protect it from flooding; with two sacks you can do the same with the
door to your house."
